I can has feedback?

This is my first crack at designing a website so I’m looking for as much constructive feedback as possible.

This is for a church website (can’t do anything about the logo) with a median population age of mid-30s.

The premise of the community is that it is similar in its revivalist essence like the crazy-costal churches but on the more liberal end of the spectrum.

Ideally it will be as expandable and flexible as possible.

There are some font problems with the tagline + headers – that’s due to working on 2 different computers – just ignore that (the services and news & events headlines have the correct font).

This is the front page only and will feature blog posts by Marty – the subpage is intended to be pretty much the same, not sure if the sidebar would go there or not yet.

Some of the things I’ve struggled with are: positioning of the social media badges (especially if I only use 2), background colours/pattern that can repeat/stretch, and the positioning/style of the tagline (which ended up impacting the headers).

Thoughts?

I would suggest adding additional line-height to the main copy. I’m not sure I like the secondary menu highlighting with the same colour as the primary. I’d probably use another colour for that hover state. Otherwise the header looks sharp and the colour scheme works. Good work.

    few quick things:

    1) bit more padding height-wise on the nav. Give the text a bit more breathing space, and the user more area to click.

    2) separate the “news and events” section. Could be hard to see events if news items keep pushing them out of the window, and vice versa.

    3) imagery is good. maybe try putting some actual photographs somewhere? emphasis the sense of community.

    otherwise, looks sharp!

I really like the social media badges in the top nav; I wouldn’t worry too much about the one under the banner if that’s what you were talking about.

The only thing that comes to mind is I’m not sure about the grey. It seems out of place with the rest of the colour scheme.

Looking good – my only real issue is with the navigation. Since you’re using the same shades of green for both the main and sub-navigation, but changing the meaning, it’s not immediately clear what you’re looking at, or that the sub-nav is the sub-nav.

I’d either lose the dark green highlight on the second level nav, or like Pat said, give the nav bar more padding so the second level nav highlight doesn’t touch the top.

You can also increase the spacing in your copy area – increase the line-height a bit. It’ll keep your copy from looking cramped.

Finally, I’d lose the faint background you’ve got in the content area. Could just be the brightness on this monitor but I can’t really make out what it is – kinda looks like a coffee ring from a mug. Either way it doesn’t really add anything so you’re probably better off without it since it’ll just distract users from the content.
