One thing I also found if I could not settle on a colour was to have a plain colour (noted above) with a bit of a very subtle pattern almost invisible to create the interest you're going for (think straight lines, squares, etc). I really like it, it's appealing to a youger audience but not overdone that someone older can go there and be comfortable. Only concern is on the actual length of blog entries and news sidebar, don't want those to be too disproportionate to one another, not sure what the plans are to page out the blogs (by # of posts, etc).
